Day 5: Train to Parma

After taking the hour train trip from Bologna to Parma we stopped at a little place I found highly rated on TripAdvisor – Salumi Garibaldi. It was a great little shop, more like what we would call a deli, but way better. The gentleman behind the counter didn’t speak any English but we were able to work together to get a charcuterie and some lovely Lambrusco. I have to admit that I wasn’t terribly upset when he brought the whole bottle of wine when we thought we only ordered a glass. 😛

We picked up some balsamico Modena 50 year, and a hunk of Parmesean-reggiano, 30 month.

Unfortunately I didn’t realize that almost everything was closed on a Monday so the town was very quiet and most of the stores and museums were closed. We were able to see a couple of places and then headed back to Bologna with our Parmesan-Reggiano and Balsamic in hand.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assuntta and the Basilica

These are a couple of the goofiest lions I have ever seen 🤪
This place was completely covered in amazing paintings, from floor to ceiling. Never seen anything like it.
/I think sometimes it’s really hard to get an idea of the vast spaces in one picture… Cheryl’s head just touched the box on the lower left in this picture… So it’s like… 9 Cheryls high? 15? Idk.

Oltre.

Absolutely one of our best meals ever (except for one course). We had the tasting menu from Oltre in Bologna and enjoyed it so much. The pictures don’t do the dishes any justice but the candlelight was delightful 😀

  • Italian ramen with Parmesean-reggiano cheese, pasta, porcini mushrooms, kale and a delicious broth
  • Chicken liver pate with some stuff (not my thing) /it was yummy-Mike
  • Tortolini with cream sauce
  • Tagliatelle with ragu
  • Braised beef cheeks in Sangiovese over mashed potatoes with pomegranate seeds
  • Panna Cotta and ‘English Soup’ ( more of a trifle)

This is inside our air bnb place… There are 3 like it in the way up to the first floor.
