Day 12: Getting Medieval on Alsace

This is the day we set aside to visit a little town north of Colmar, called Ribeauville. It’s another Christmas market, but this time it’s medieval. You guessed it: crusaders, monks, swords, and demons… A witch’s brew of great food and fun!

A quick trip on a bus to Ribeauville dropped us off in front of the market.

Ok again there were a lot of people.

I think of Salmon

Ten or so people running around in funky demon outfits… They didn’t seem to be krampus monsters, more like WoW characters, but still cool.

You can see how tall they all are…

In some of our pics you can see a little blob at the top, way in the background… like this one.

That’s one of the 3 castles that sit above the valley! Here’s a more better.

The market was a lot bigger than we expected, with booths pushed up into winding side alleys, and sprawled across several town squares.

Also really cool: street rando working the crowd

Ok now to my raison d’etre: the food.

we hit the vin chaude
We got a bretzel (brioche pretzel) with cheese and bacon
Nutella crepe. I ate so much.
This tasted like a glorious TWINKIE!!!! OMG so good.
Stumbled on a dude frying something, turns out it was another on God’s perfect foods.
Crispy, yummy fried taters
Then there was the bacon guy… Srsly buy it raw on a stick, and you da cook!

Check this out: big fire, with a bubbling pot… What’s in it!????

Fish, potatoes, carrots, who knows what else
Unexpected treat: pressed Apple cider.

Late for the Nativity scene? Give up and drink.

Just sittin with mah camels
Great way to have public heat in the market

We spun around in circles for a bit, watching drummers drum and pipers pipe, then wrapped up, exhausted again.

Colmar, light dinner, and a bottle of rosè cremant in our future.
