Day 1: Seattle to Bologna

And we’re off! Direct flight to Frankfurt and then connecting to Bologna. We flew on Condor airlines and it was a great airline. Of course I had to start with a glass of bubbly 🥂

Our Air B & B

After a short taxi ride from the airport we arrived at our home for the next week. It was built in the 1700’s and the restorations include this magnificent staircase.

Cena (dinner)

We had our first Italian dinner at a restaurant recommended by our air B &b host Francesca at Da Pietro Trattoria Ristorante Tradizionale

The meal did not disappoint. We started with Lambrusco, which was the perfect beverage after our long day of traveling.

Next was an appetizer of pumpkin soup with burrata and bread chips. I would have never thought of putting burrata in soup, but from now on I will!

It didn’t take us too long to decide on the first course – it had to be the local specialty of tagliatelle with ragu… We call it pasta bolognese in America, but seriously bad form here… even the mayor has claimed that that dish is not from Bologna.

The last dish was beef cheeks braised in red wine over 9 hours. I’ve heard and used the phrase ‘it melts like butter,’ but never in my life have i truly experienced this in a beef dish. Taking a bite of this almost felt like it had fallen off your fork…it was even softer than the polenta. It was delicious. The only frustration we had with this meal is that it left us too full for dessert.
